In this en plein air watercolour course you’ll explore the expressive and unpredictable qualities of watercolour and ink, while investigating the shapes, forms, volumes, and structures found in nature.

During this two day course with Francesco Poiana, students will tackle the balance between representation and abstraction, examining how renowned artists like Turner, Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, and Howard Hodgkin used abstraction to bring landscapes to life. 

Working with watercolour and ink, exploring different scenic locations around Messum’s Barn in Tisbury, the participants will create their own interpretations of the natural surroundings, collecting fragments from the landscape.

This course is ideal for all levels, whether you’re new to watercolour or looking to refine your skills.

Please Bring:

• Set of Watercolours
• Watercolour Brushes (variety of sizes)
• Watercolour paper/pad
• Indian ink (coloured inks optional)
• Graphite Pencil (2B or softer)
• Watercolour Pencils
• Two water containers
• Masking Tape

Born in Faedis, North East Italy in 1990, Francesco Poiana attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and then the celebrated Albicocco fine art printing workshop in Udine before studying for a Masters degree at Central St Martins College of Art in London. He joined the Royal Drawing School in 2019. The discovery and development of new techniques in printing and painting are an essential part of Poiana’s work.

Poiana’s work represents an intimate voyage — towards the image of an intangible place, imagined only in daydreams.
