Sophie Mason is a visual artist and food grower.  For over a decade her work has explored different approaches to the natural world, working and thinking within the intersections of ecology, climate breakdown, motherhood and chronic illness.  Shaped by and from the land around her, Mason’s textile works or ‘blankets’ use a mordanted canvas to document her experiences within the landscape as well as pigments processed from foraged plants and minerals.  The blankets act both as a traditional canvas holding pigment, and as an intermediary between her body and the world.  The accumulative residue of marks stain the canvas and over a long period of time build a map of care that tracks her relationships with the land around her.  At a certain point the blankets spend more time in the studio at which point Mason draws on them with children’s pencils, sews pockets into them for medicinal herbs, seeds, feathers or makes shelves for found object. Mason has a MA, City and Guilds of London Art School and a Diploma, Garden Design, Chelsea Physic Garden.
