Provenance:
The Estate of Henry Lamb, R.A.

This landscape painting by Raymond Coxon (1896-1997) came from a small collection artist Henry Lamb RA made between the end of WW1 and his marriage in 1928. Even before the war he had been interested in younger artists, and particularly helped Stanley Spencer. Later he brought work by Spencer, and also by some of the generation who were emerging from art colleges after the War, including Henry Moore and Raymond Coxon. Henry Lamb never hung his own paintings at his home near Salisbury; two Coxons were the main works in his sitting room.

Coxon studied at Leeds Art School. There he met and became a great friend of Henry Moore and a girl called Edna Ginesi, of Italian descent but Leeds born and bred. They were all serious artists, but both young men were in love with Edna. They went on together to the Royal College in London. Though Moore and Edna had their Yorkshire backgrounds in common, she preferred Coxon. They were married in 1926, and lived and worked devotedly together until he died in 1987, aged 100. Henry Moore was their best man; Coxon was his when he married in turn, and the two couples stayed friends and travelled together.

Coxon taught at Richmond School of Art and they lived at Hammersmith. They frequently returned to Yorkshire and many of his early landscapes are of the Dales. One of these two is identified as Colby Hall, which is outside Askrigg; this painting is a rear view of the building.

Artist Resale Right (ARR) is applicable on the purchase price.
