Peter Matthews works alone along the coasts of the ocean, venturing into the wilderness along the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian ocean coasts. Following a near death experience whilst surfing in Mexico in 2007, Matthews started drawing directly in the ocean.  Immersion with the ocean and nature is central to his practice, as is the notion and experience of the journey.   His work straddles the performative and the conceptual, with experimental processes investigating his experience of time, place, space, the sublime, the impermanent, the romantic, the mysterious and the poetic. His process of working in solitude in the ocean is defined and informed by the poetic blending of rituals, dreams and the diversity of fringe and earth sciences while moving and responding to what is happening in our contemporary world.  Since 2016, his paintings have grown in scale as he ventured further into the wilderness. Incorporating found objects; fragments of paintings and ocean bodies, these hybrid works from different places are sewn together to become ‘non-places’; sharing the duality of being from somewhere, but nowhere specific, toying with the notions of presence and absence, memory, fragility and endurance.
