“Led by a young Basotho herdsboy, Haretsebe Shale, to this site, I created this image in a departure from my usual vast and empty landscapes, with the boy becoming the focus of the composition. Half way down the dizzying, near vertical descent to the waterfall’s base, I was struck by the boy’s natural grace and dignity, and by the way his form embodied the landscape that is his home. Majoana Mabeli Herdsboy holds a timeless African scene, the ceaseless flow of water, the deep bellowing noise, bearded vultures circling in the steam clouds and the gaze of a boy wrapped in his most valuable possession, a blanket.”
