El Ultimo Grito
1997
Collections: MOMA, New York
This chair was designed by Spanish design group El Ultimo Grito whose members include Roberto Feo (b. 1966) and Rosario Hurtado (b. 1966). They formed El Ultimo Grito in 1995 when they were studying together at Goldsmiths College in London. The chair derives its name from the Spanish-speaking bar-owner in the film High Noon. The idea of its manufacture was based on the Birkenstock shoe. The chair is made from the granular waste of the cork manufacturing industry in the Iberian Peninsula, mirroring the Birkenstock shoe creation process. The cork waste has been mixed with synthetic rubber to create, which has made the chair more durable for the cold molding process. Roberto Feo created an enticing and comfortable-looking lounge chair. The materials look familiar yet strange and gives the chair the impression of incredible weight and physical sturdiness. The chair in reality can be easily moved around using the front wheels and Jane Atfield’s chair is another example of sustainable furniture, which the world is only now just considering.
