Louise Balaam is a painter of expressive, gestural landscapes, which communicate an intense emotional response to the experience of being in the landscape. Balaam’s working practice involves drawing outside in the landscape, using a range of media including watercolour, oil stick, pencil or charcoal, and aiming to capture something of the sensations of being in that particular place, with its own specific light and weather. Balaam then works in the studio but not directly from the drawings, preferring to work intuitively and allow space for imagination and memory as the painting develops and takes on its own life.
