Thinking through compost, Liz Elton’s practice begins in landscape and still-life painting, moving into the expanded field to explore the potential of waste and the recycling of matter, considering our relationship with earth, how to continue, nourishment and care. Much of her work takes the form of large painting installations informed by agricultural landscapes and magnified images of her skin. Frequently made with the intention of not lasting, with compostable cornstarch as a ground, they are coloured with vegetable dyes from kitchen waste, water miscible oils and water colours, and may be embedded with soil and seeds of medicinal plants or cover crops. Loosely sewn together with silk, the works occupy a space between a continuing attempt to hold things together and an acceptance of inevitable demise. Grief and hope run hand in hand as Elton considers loss and potential, both personal and environmental.
Liz Elton has a BA in Fine Art (Painting) from Wimbledon College of Art, and an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design.
