Oil on board, diptych

Kate Giles is a contemporary artist whose work for many years has focused on a keen and intimate vision of the landscape of her native East Anglia. She now lives and works in Norfolk.
Drawing in the landscape is the groundwork for all that later develops in the studio. Working en plein air allows for the specifics of particulars – tree, field, angle, light and shadow, alert to the weathering of the year – to be recorded faithfully; a vital initial response to the seized moment.
The subject becomes what resonates between memory, presence and the feeling at the time. For the past couple of years her work has concentrated on field corners, stray paths, dividing roads punctuated by the particular vernacular of pylon, gate, signage, signalling somewhere or nowhere in particular.
Using paint to examine space, place and time, Giles plays with the surface of the work through varying densities of paint which contrast and interplay with the colour and texture. This alternates in coming to the fore, echoing through corresponding paint tonalities, acting as a spatial counterpoint between surface and depth; an engagement with process itself.
