“Ignimbrites, solidified clouds of ash and silica spewed from immensely powerful volcanic explosions millions of years ago, spring from the desert-scape in the foreground. Sculpted by ferocious winds, concealed by photographic stillness, into jagged precipices, these formations are known as the Cathedrals of Tara. Beyond the Cathedrals, spreads the Salar de Tara, the flat expanse of salt plains, and the principle feeding ground for flamingos in Chile.All of the three flamingo species found in Chile, the Andean, Chilean and James, are visible in the distance, congregating on the Salar de Tara.”
