David Hockney OM CH RA (born 9 July 1937) is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. On 15 November 2018, Hockney’s 1972 work Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold at Christie’s auction house in New York City for $90 million (£70 million), becoming the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction, a record held until 2019. Hockney has experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolours, photography, and many other media including a fax machine, paper pulp, computer applications and iPad drawing programs. The subject matter of interest ranges from still lifes to landscapes, portraits of friends, his dogs and stage designs. The present work dates to circa 1968 and depicts friends most likely in Powis Terrace, Notting Hill where the artist was resident. His portraits and exquisite line drawings were most recently the subject of an exhibition at the re-opening of the National Portrait Gallery in 2023.
