Bridget McCrum ‘The Road Less Travelled’

EXHIBITION CATALOGUE

15 July – 6 August 2017

Bridget’s life has taken her on an extensive journey of discovery. From early years in London and Malta, Gozo and then Middle East as the wife of a British Naval Officer, she has a thirst for exploration that is undiminished.

Aged 81 at the time of the show, movement continues to influence her work. The language is pared back, deceptively simple marks and gestures in charcoal or stone that are immediately and powerfully suggestive. A bird leaps off the page or takes flight bringing with it a sense of the vitality and also of moments long past.

Bridget McCrum

[ 1934
- Present ]
McCrum’s work is a potent fusion of the ancient with the modern. She works primarily in stone, from which some pieces are also cast in bronze. Initially influenced by archaeological finds and by the work of Brancusi, Hepworth and Moore, her sculpture also contains oblique references to the landscape and fauna around her homes in Devon and Gozo.
