Brian Bradshaw (1923 – 2016) was born in Bolton and attended the Bolton School of Art and the Manchester School of Art. In 1948 he continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London, where he was awarded a scholarship to the British School at Rome. A period spent traveling in Europe was followed by a one-man show at the Salford and Bolton Art Gallery. In London he exhibited at the RA, the Leicester Galleries, the Chenil Galleries and Crane Kalman. Examples of his idiosyncratic, northern townscapes are held in the collections of the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester.

Anglezarke Moore is in the West Pennines, Lancashire; an ancient moorland, human activity around Anglezarke can be traced to pre-historic times. In 1960 Brashaw took up the post of professor of fine art at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, where his expressionist renderings of the landscape there influenced the Grahamstown Group and notable students.
