Messums in Australia

Australia Unveiled

Celebrating Australia Day at Australia House, London

22 – 24 January 2025

MESSUMS is delighted to present a series of Australian artists here in the UK who represent a rich history of art that, much like the country itself, is a diverse fusion of influences and ideas, shaped and inspired by unique geographical and cultural perspectives, as well as a vital artistic lineage, skilfully blending abstraction and representation, history, and innovation in their work.

Featured artists: Elisabeth Cummings, Peter Godwin and Ann Thomson

We are delighted to be a partner for 2024 in the Corridor Project, a not-for-profit multidisciplinary arts and cultural organisation providing a platform for artists-in-residencies, education, cultural pursuits and research in the form of exhibitions, workshops and events.

Our represented artist Tyga Helme recently joined the project for a residency, located on Wiradjuri Country in regional NSW Australia.

Tyga created new work on Wiradjuri country located in the majestic granite hills of the Central West NSW, Her observations triggered a series of rapidly drawn gouache drawings, now in Tyga’s studio in preparation for exhibition at Messums West in 2026. Tyga responded to atmospheric transitions of light, sound, and colour from UK to AUS palette and relationship to new landscapes with astonishing ease and intrinsic observation.

Laurence Edwards: A Gathering of Uncertainties

at Orange Regional Gallery, NSW

3 February – 15 April 2023

Developed in partnership with Messums Wiltshire, this exhibition was the first exhibition of contemporary sculpture in the recently completed North Gallery at Orange and radically transformed the space, offering Australian audiences a rare encounter with Laurence Edwards’ work.

Director of Orange Regional Gallery, Bradley Hammond wrote:

‘Whether in the form of small-scale studies, or large imposing figures, Edwards’ bronze figures have an immediate and compelling presence. This is due in part to the tension in his pieces between a raw, potent physicality and the psychological ambiguity of his subjects, who often appear to be held inwardly in a state of fragility or uncertainty.’
