‘Reinventing the Wheel’ with Hugo Spowers

Saturday 23 June, 11am  BOOK TICKETS

Join Hugo Spowers, MD and Founder of Riversimple, pioneering the next generation of zero emission vehicles. They use hydrogen, not batteries, and emit nothing but water. Able to refill in three minutes, the vehicles will offer a solution for those who value flexibility and freedom, and want to live lightly on the planet.

It’s the late 1990s and Riversimple’s founder, Hugo Spowers, leaves his career in motorsport due to concerns about the environmental impact of combustion engines. Having previously run a business designing and building racing cars and restoring historic racing cars, Hugo founded Riversimple in 2001, a business dedicated to eliminating the environmental impact of personal transport.

In 2016, Hugo was awarded the RAC’s prestigious Simms Medal for ‘An outstanding contribution to motoring innovation’ with the Riversimple Rasa. In 2019 Hugo won the Unreasonable Person award at the London Business School’s Real Innovation Awards, for showing “enormous tenacity and stubbornness in pursuing an idea, despite the difficulties encountered along the way”.

These challenges go far beyond the technical. Hugo will talk about the importance of designing the whole business to be fit for purpose if we are ever to enjoy the privilege of sustainable mobility; Riversimple’s circular ‘usership’ model that makes efficiency profitable and turns the tide on built-in obsolescence; and Riversimple’s Future Guardian governance, ‘balancing and protecting’ the benefit streams of all critical stakeholders.

In 2022 Hugo was awarded an MBE for his outstanding contribution to technology.
