Quiet Strength: Working in Paper

As part of our season exploring the material of paper, this exhibition presented the work of four female artists – Becky Allen, Purdey Fitzherbert, Alice von Maltzahn and Emilie Pugh showcasing the diversity of paper as a material. While the practices of these artists vary in their nature and approach, there is a shared affinity in the work and their relationship with the material.

Biography 

Purdey Fitzherbert

- Present ]
Purdey Fitzherbert (b.1987) followed her foundational studies at Wimbledon College of Art with an Honours Fine Art degree from Newcastle University, where she also worked with senior Psychology lecturer Dr Gabriele Jordan to enhance her knowledge on human experience of colour. Since 2011, Purdey has exhibited in group shows with Hus Gallery in Monaco, Gstaad, Switzerland, New York.

Emilie Pugh

Emilie Pugh was born in London in 1988 and studied at Byam Shaw School of Art and at the Ruskin School of Art and Drawing at Oxford University.

Becky Allen

The practice of London based artist, Becky Allen, explores drawing as a form of meditative catharsis. She channels the movement and energy of repetitive mark-making to create artworks that express a visual record of passage through time. Alice von Maltzahn

Alice von Maltzahn is a contemporary artist living and working in London. She studied art at WimbledonCollege of Fine Art and The Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing at Oxford University. Between 2011 and 2013 Alice worked with Wendt + Friedman Gallery in Berlin, on both group and solo exhibitions in Berlin and Cologne.
