Following a significant large-scale travelling exhibition in Japan and Taiwan in 2023 – 2024, Messums Org is pleased to present a new body of work from Makoto Kagoshima at our Cork Street gallery.

The Japanese exhibition – Day after Day – was presented to Kagoshima as the idea of reflecting openly on his everyday life in the gallery space. This was presented as a variety of dishes featuring his customary animals and plants in rich colors on the “breakfast”, “lunch” and “dinner” table. An idea that gave Kagoshima the “great opportunity for me to reconsider the things I love, what I really want to do, or new things I want to try.”

Travelling from renowned institutions Itami City Museum of Art, History and Culture, PLAY! MUSEUM, Tokyo, Sano Art Museum, Shizuoka and the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, Fukuo, in Japan to the Huashan1914 Creative Park, Taipei, Taiwan, this collection of work proves why time and time again Kagoshima garners international attention and adoration for his ceramics.

We are delighted to present here Kagoshima’s personal selection from this touring exhibition, available to acquire for the first time exclusively through Messums, as well as of new work inspired by the success of this show. Through dedication and commitment to his vision, Kagoshima’s core belief is that ‘my best work is my latest work.’ These pieces, direct from his atelier in Fukuoka, Japan, will be an absolute delight to devoted collectors and fresh eyes alike.
