Williams’ practice is rooted in drawing. The ability of drawing to connect the hand, eye and mind with such synchronicity offers Williams vast potential for interrogating his subject. Acute observational analysis is central to the creation of the work – the act of drawing being synonymous with the act of seeing. For him, the very directness of drawing can reveal the spirit of the subject being portrayed whether that be a portrait study or a lemon tree. His drawings are testament to the true nature of draughtsmanship evidencing his absorption and internalisation of subject matter. Williams has honed his technique through his attuned eye and concentration, his skill is undeniable, the graphic virtuosity evident in each mark made. The resultant drawings have a tactile quality; portraits that evoke intimacy, reflect the human countenance and the introspection of his silent, still models.
Separate to drawing’s use as preparatory for painting, Williams significantly values drawing as an independent art form. He believes drawing studies can have equal presence to a final painting. In both cases, drawing is fundamental, utilised as a means to discover, to comprehend and to communicate his appreciation and grasp of his subject. The enduring impact of his drawings ultimately lies in their humanity and in their presence.
