PAPER: Kaori Kato ‘Unfolding, Unfurling’

PRESS RELEASE

From 5 August, our in-depth focus on materials investigates paper. Japanese contemporary artist Kaori Kato will take over the barn gallery with a site-specific installation. Kato creates geometric patterns and organic forms by hand-folding paper. As artist-in-residence for a short period at Messums Wiltshire, she will be making work on site as she responds to the interior of the thirteenth-century tithe barn. Her paper sculpture will dynamically integrate with the space with works suspended from the ceiling, unfolding from the floor, rhythmically rolling over plinths and curling over the walls. This installation will be accompanied by a series of smaller scale wall-based works.

Kaori Kato obtained her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts Drawing in 2008, her bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in 2009, and her master’s degree in Visual Art in 2010 from the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) at the University of Melbourne. She returned to Japan, Hokkaido in 2013, and has since had her work displayed at a number of local and international shows, including in Australia. Her work was featured as part of the Vancouver fashion week SS 2019 collection, and Western Canada Fashion Week SS2020 collection, showcasing more than 20 different wearable paper sculptures between the two events. In 2022, she was the winner of the ‘Paper on Skin’ international wearable paper Art competition held in Australia.
