Material Changes: Creativity and Problem Solving towards a Post-Hydrocarbon World

From 17 – 27 September Messums will be at Space House in Covent Garden focusing on non-hydrocarbon awareness with an exhibition showcasing artists working innovatively with alternative materials. This exhibition forms part of Messums well-established ‘Active Environmentalism’ programme and long-standing commitment to art that engages with the environment and strives for sustainability. As a gallery, Messums is dedicated to proactively responding to the world we live in and creating a platform for artists who are using their creative practices to activate knowledge, to problem-solve and to develop new, progressive approaches that can advance our thinking and understanding.

Furthermore Messums believes in the fusion of art and scientific research.  This exhibition is in partnership with Ocean Rising, a global initiative weaving the ocean into the fabric of contemporary culture through creative partnerships.  Created by the Schmidt Ocean Institute and Nekton, it integrates the ocean with art, fashion, film and more to spark curiosity, inspire new perspectives and galvanise ocean empathy.  Through partnerships like this it cultivates a vibrant community dedicated to celebrating and safeguarding our blue planet and inspiring a new generation of ocean ambassadors.

The exhibition at Space House will present the work of three artists who are producing work with a post hydrocarbon mindset – Zena Holloway, Julia Lohmann and Tessa Campbell- Fraser. It will be on display during London Design Festival and will coincide with the launch of Material Matters London, the art fair dedicated to material intelligence in architecture and design, which this year will take place at Space House from 17-20 September.
