‘Jacqueline with Still Life’, winner of the National Portrait Gallery’s Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award, 2024

Antony Williams, one of the artists represented by Messums, will join us for an artist’s talk on the eve of his life drawing course at Messums Studios, Chilmark.

Antony, best known for his mastery of the tricky medium of egg tempera, is Vice President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and is a member of the New English Art Club and the Pastel Society. His work is based on intense observation, particularly of human flesh, which creates a heightened sense of realism.

His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including first prize in the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2024 at the National Portrait Gallery in July 2024 where the painting was exhibited.

Williams’s work is held in notable public collections including the National Portrait Gallery; Royal Collection; House of Commons; MCC Lords and Garrick Club.
