ACE SMA is a charity run by Michael and Sophie Howes, which is aiming to raise awareness of the condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy, (SMA) a rare, genetically inherited neuromuscular condition, and provide support to those who live with it.
Until recently the majority of children born with SMA died before their 2nd birthday and those that did survive were subjected to a life of ever diminishing mobility and motor functions. The outlook for children with SMA has significantly changed in the last 5 years as there are now 3 remarkable new drugs that can slow down the progression of the condition and almost stop it. Therefore, not only are children surviving but they are thriving. So far ACE SMA has been focused on funding research to prove the effectiveness of active, ambitious and regular physiotherapy for children suffering with SMA. The charity also has further ambitious plans to support children living with SMA to live more active and adventurous lives all of which we will hear more on 28th!
