Brodie Neill
Award-winning Artist, practice highlights issues of Ocean plastics
Tasmanian designer Brodie Neill reclaims and transforms raw materials into museum-grade pieces that blend an enduring design language with state-of-the-art digital technology. His furniture is known for its expressive form and meticulous attention to craft, and often foreshadow environmental issues.
Neill’s pioneering work on plastic waste has seen him represent Australia at the London Design Biennale with Plastic Effects featuring the Gyro table in 2016. Neill has subsequently addressed both the European Union Parliament and the United Nations on the harmful impact of single-use plastics. ReCoil made from wood harvested from an underwater Tasmanian forest was first presented at London Craft Week in 2021. In 2022, nine of his works crafted from sustainable materials were displayed in a dedicated selling exhibition Material Consciousness for Sotheby’s. His iconic Cowrie and Alpha chairs for Made in Ratio feature in Taschen’s 1000 Chairs, and his @Chair featured in Time magazine’s ‘The Design 100’ edit.
Neill studied furniture design at the Hutchins School, University of Tasmania and Rhode Island School of Design. He established his studio in London in 2005. His works feature in museums, private collections and exhibitions around the world, including the AMA Collection in Venice, National Gallery of Victoria, Rhode Island School of Design in the USA, the Powerhouse in Sydney and South Australian Gallery of Art.
