Fabian Peake

Fabian Peake was born in Rustington, Sussex, in 1942; the son of the writer, illustrator and artist, Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) (best known for the ‘Gormenghast’ series of fantasy novels), and the painter and writer Maeve Gilmore (1917-1983). He studied first at Chelsea College of Art (1958-63) and then at the Royal College of Art (1963-66), where he won several prizes for his work. As a student, Peake met his wife, the artist Dame Phyllida Barlow DBE RA (1944- 2023), with whom he has five children, including the artists Florence Peake (b. 1973) and Eddie Peake (b. 1981). Alongside his career as an artist, Peake taught painting for many years as a Senior Lecturer in the Fine Art Department of Manchester Metropolitan University.

He has had numerous solo exhibitions around the globe, including recent shows at the Kunstmuseum, Luzern in 2019, and Hauser and Wirth, Somerset in 2022. He has also participated in various group exhibitions in Great Britain, Europe, the United States and South America, and is widely collected, featuring in public institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the collection of the Arts Council of England. Peake lives and works in London.
